Knowledge and Skills for Sustainability
Addressing the Global Climate Crisis
The Australian Embassy and the Japan Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S) are to jointly hold a second Australia-Japan International Education Symposium on "Knowledge and Skills for Sustainability", in collaboration with The Natural Edge Project, with the theme "Addressing the Global Climate Crisis". The symposium will allow policy makers, administrators, educators, researchers and practitioners to share their experiences in course, research and curriculum development in sustainability.

持続可能な社会に向けた高等教育~気候変動をテーマとして
オーストラリア大使館と東京大学サステイナビリティ学連携研究機構は、第2回オーストラリア-日本「サステイナビリティのための知識とスキル」に関する教育シンポジウムを開催します。持続可能な低炭素社会づくりに必要な知識とスキルをもつ人材育成を促進するため、政策立案者・研究者・高等教育関係者とともに大学院教育プログラムや、教育カリキュラムの構築などについての経験をわかちあい、将来のさらなる国際的な研究連携や教育連携の促進を図ります。サステイナビリティや環境に関する教育カリキュラムの開発を使命とする「The Natural Edge Project」との協力により、気候変動に関する教育・研究をテーマとします。
Charlie Hargroves is the co-founder and Director of The Natural Edge Project (TNEP). Since the founding of TNEP Mr Hargroves has been the Chief Investigator on over 1.7 million dollars of research grants. Mr Hargroves has worked with a range of international partners such as UNESCO, UNEP, Wuppertal Institute, University Leaders for a Sustainable Future, World Federation of Engineering Organisations, Chicago Climate Exchange, World Technopolis Association, Chicago Manufacturing Centre, IPENZ and Rocky Mountain Institute. His research is in sustainable industry policy, with a career goal of further investigating options for nations to build robust economic growth strategies that include significant reductions to a range of pressures placed on the environment.
Cheryl Desha is a lecturer in the School of Engineering at Griffith University and the Deputy Project Director of The Natural Edge Project (TNEP). In 2005 she was selected as the Engineers Australia Young Professional Engineer of the Year. Ms Desha is focusing on developing TNEP initiatives related to rapidly transitioning engineering education to embed sustainability knowledge and skills. Her research involves the development of a framework for rapid curriculum renewal, to facilitate the transition. Ms Desha's career goal is to facilitate sustainable development by empowering society with emerging language, knowledge and skills related to achieving sustainable solutions. Following an AFS Scholarship to Japan in 1992-93 she is a frequent visitor.
The Natural Edge Project (TNEP) is a non-profit partnership on research, education and strategy for innovation for sustainable prosperity (www.naturaledgeproject.net) hosted by Griffith University and the Australian National University.
Professor Takashi Mino
Department of Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, The University of Tokyo
Professor Takashi MINO obtained bachelor, Master's and Doctoral degrees in 1978, 1980 and 1983, respectively, from Department of Urban Engineering, the University of Tokyo (Todai), where he studied wastewater engineering, more specifically microbial ecology and its application to biological wastewater treatment. Currently, he is Professor at Department of Socio-cultural Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences. Since 1999, he has been involved in sustainability education, and organized a yearly short-term summer program "Intensive Program on Sustainability – IPoS" and is now responsible as coordinator for a new Master's program "Graduate Program in Sustainability Science – GPSS" at Todai.
